Purple Vs Blue – Pythons noble defeat

A beautiful sunny day in Cambridge saw the Pythons first home game of the season. In their inaugural season they managed to avoid a fixture against the perennially top team in the division and old rivals the Hertfordshire Hurricanes. After a successful rookie season the powers that be saw it fit for the Pythons to face the challenge of the current National Champions.
Hertfordshire sported a large squad, many with significant experience of American football outside of the university league. With some lovely contrasting uniforms with the royal purple of the Hurricanes and the powder blue Pythons the coin toss was won by Cambridge who elected to receive.
The opening Cambridge drive was somewhat of a tale of things to come with difficulty in stringing together gains on plays, with the Hertfordshire defence forcing a 3 and out. The resulting punt was returned to around midfield giving the Hurricanes great field position to start off the day on offence. A six play drive by Herts, with a devastating facemask penalty included, was capped off by a #5 Joe Thompson pass to #86 Samuel Adex. The resulting PAT was good. 7-0 Herts.
The Pythons defence  remained stout for the remainder of the quarter forcing 3 and outs on two Hurricanes drives. With the offence showing few signs of life, at the beginning of the 2nd quarter the Hurricanes struck again with a 77 yard pass from Thompson to #27 Varman Ratnakumaran, another successful PAT left the score line at 14-0.
The rest of the 2nd quarter was one to forget for Pythons fans, with a fumble recovery inside the Pythons 20 by Herts leading to a FG attempt, however a roughing the snapper penalty gave the Canes a first down, which Thompson capitalised on with a quick snap QB sneak for the 9 yard TD. 21-0 Herts.
Struggling on O yet again Pythons QB Joe Yarwood threw an interception to Herts #21 Domonic Gould, who had a great day on the field with 9 tackles, 4 assists, 2 sacks, a forced fumble, fumble recovery and interception.
Herts starting on the Pythons 21, put together a 5 play drive capped off with another QB run rom Thompson for the 5 yard TD. 28-0 Herts.
The woes continued for the Pythons but this time on special teams, with a fumbled kick-off giving the ball back to the Hurricanes on the 24 yard line. With penalties rife in the drive, Thompson again capped it off with a 26 yard pass to #11 Nich Bagnall. HT 35-0.
Matthew Hawkins kicks off the second half. #34 Ben Johnson runs the return 85 yards for a TD. PAT no good. 41-0.
Resulting kick-off is fielded by #91 Robert Elmore, by a hard hit jarred the ball loose, Herts started on the Pythons 44 yard line. The subsequent Herts drive features three holding flags against them (one of them negating a TD), but ends with another Thompson pass to Bagnall for the TD. PAT is good. 48-0.
The Pythons offence finally managed to get a first down towards the end of the 3rd quarter with successive passes from Yarwood to newcomer Jaason Geerts. However the drive ended in disaster with another INT thrown to #51 Harry Shelton, who ran it back for the 63 yard TD. 54-0 Herts.
On the next drive the Pythons offence decided to make an appearance. Starting on their own 32, a 2 yard run by Conor Rooney, followed by passes from Yarwood to Elmore for 19 yard, Steve Kinnersley for 5 yards, Geerts for 9 yards, a Sebastian Funk 17 yard run and capped off by a Yarwood 21 yard pass to Elmore…Touchdown Pythons. 2pt try no good. 54-6.
With 45 seconds left and Herts get the ball back. #18 James Cunningham (backup QB) runs on three successive plays. The last one being a 3 yard TD. PAT is good. 61-6.
Undoubtedly the Hurricanes were a class above the Pythons, boasting an impressive setup. The game was played in very good spirits with the Pythons staying determined until the final whistle, and Hertfordshire being great sportsmen until the end.
